The word ‘surveillance’ is on everyone’s lips. We all know what it means. No one balks at the sight of a CCTV camera, or blinks when asked to provide a passport in order to apply for a job or to open a bank account. We accept security guards in shops and in shopping malls. We accept that we are going to be watched, weighed and measured wherever we go and whatever we do. We are imprinted, barcoded into the system. Everything we do leaves a trail; purchasing goods, withdrawing cash, driving on a public road, making a mobile telephone call. Somehow, we just accept it. We simply call it the surveillance culture, shrug our shoulders and move on. Indeed, some people even like the idea of surveillance, like being ‘imaged’ for various purposes.
